IT’S HEATING UP – AND WE ARE DOING IT. That’s the message – firmer than last time – from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The latest IPCC report to hit the news stands has the usual mix of careful hedging, worry and confusion depending upon your starting point. But get this; when the BBC tried to find a “working scientist” (as they put it) prepared to argue that climate change isn’t happening (balance being everything, of course) THEY COULDN’T FIND ONE.
So when lay people (Jeremy Clarkson, Nigel Lawson, James Dalrymple) tell you it’s a load of rubbish, ask yourself: would you trust them to diagnose your likelihood of developing cancer? Or would you go to a doctor?
Unfortunately, the stronger the science becomes, the more diluted the government’s response. Chancellor George Osborne argued this week that if we responded to climate change by banning aluminium smelters only to see China building them and British jobs being lost, that would be a pretty stupid decision. But it’s also pretty stupid to go on charging pell-mell for the cliff edge just because no-one else is putting on their brakes. And as we keep saying, you can’t deal with science by diplomacy and compromise; you can’t negotiate with it. It Just Is.
